The Xiangtan Economic and Technological Development Zone was established in November 2003 and was upgraded to a national-level development zone in 2011. The zone is the only one in Hunan Province with integrated operation of national-level economic and technological development zone and national-level comprehensive boned zone. It is also a collaborative and coordinated zone of the China (Hunan) Pilot Free Trade Zone and a national-level green industrial zone. The general plan of the zone covers an area of 138 square kilometers, with a built-up area of approximately 42 square kilometers. The zone has been developed into a modern industrial new district and riverside town with a permanent population of nearly 300,000.
A "two core and one characteristic" industrial structure has taken shape in the zone, with automotive and equipment manufacturing, and electronic information and next-generation information technology as its core pillars, and high-end medical devices and biomedicine as its characteristic support. The zone boasts a complete automotive industrial chain anchored by Geely Auto, encompassing R&D, testing, vehicle assembly, parts manufacturing, sales, and training. The equipment manufacturing sector is led by companies like Hongda Vacuum and Yongda Machinery. The electronics and next-generation information technology industries are spearheaded by firms such as Lens Technology. Additionally, the medical device sector is represented by Bloomage Biotech and Vathin Medical.
There are now nearly 6,000 registered enterprises in the zone, including 389 enterprises above designated size, 175 high-tech enterprises, 67 specialized and innovative "little giant" enterprises, and six manufacturing single champion enterprises. The zone has four national-level quality inspection centers and enterprise technology centers, along with 27 academician workstations, provincial-level enterprise technology centers, and engineering technology research centers. The zone is currently accelerating the development of the Xiangjiang Science Town, Xiangtan University Town, Hunan Medical Device Industrial Park, and Jiuhua District of Hunan Xiangjiang New Area.
